Steven Dougherty, who began working at Juilliard in 2014, teaches ballroom dance to Drama students and organizes the Jaye Dougherty Juilliard Star Ball, a ballroom dance competition for first-year drama students. Dougherty has worked in the dance industry professionally since 1992 after leaving his position with IBM as a programmer and systems engineer. Although he graduated from Iona College with a BA in computer information systems, dance was his passion. As an amateur competitor, he was a national 10-dance champion and national ballroom champion, having represented the U.S. in two world championships as well as touring and competing in the former Soviet Union as a dance ambassador. As a professional dance competitor, Dougherty was the U.S. National Rising Star Smooth Champion in 2000 and a five-time U.S. and world finalist. He has also made appearances as a dancer on several television soap operas, ESPN, and PBS’s America’s Ballroom Challenge. He has performed on stage at various venues including Carnegie Hall, the Vail International Dance Festival, and the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino. His choreography credits include Romeo and Juliet for Juilliard, the musicals Ballroom and La Cage Aux Folles for the Elmwood Playhouse in Nyack, N.Y., and Cabaret for the Bergen County Players in Oradell, N.J. In addition to traveling the U.S. as a ballroom competition adjudicator, he owns the Metropolitan Dance Center, a ballroom and Latin dance studio in Stamford, Conn.
