Welcome to the Student Leadership Selection Process for 2017-2018!

Juilliard’s leadership positions provide students with a great opportunity to build leadership, communication, and advocacy skills, develop your ability to work within a team, foster confidence, help others, create community, and form relationships with your peers across Juilliard’s three divisions. We are pleased that you have taken the time to consider one of these leadership positions. Whether you become an Orientation Leader or a Diversity Advocate, we believe these important leadership positions will supplement your artistic and academic pursuits by providing you with challenges, successes, group interaction skills and personal growth opportunities.

How to Apply

To be considered for a student leadership position, you must do the following:

  • Complete the online application by Tuesday, January 31, 2017.  
    • This includes a resume, short essay (200 to 500 words), and the mandatory recommendation from a non-family member which you can find in the link below.
  • Attend one of the Group Process sessions on Sunday, February 12, 2017.
    • There will be a morning session and an afternoon session that you can choose from.
  • Finish your interview with your assigned staff member(s) between February 15 - March 24, 2017.

We expect to send out offer letters during the first week of April 2017 and all selected student leaders will need to attend the spring training workshop on Sunday, April 23, 2017.

Please read through the application carefully and be sure to meet all deadlines and criteria. The application is your first step in the selection process and is representative of your skills and qualities.

Colloquium Peer Mentor

General Description

Colloquium Peer Mentors assist with the overall implementation of Colloquium, a required 1 credit course required of all first-time college students. Peer Mentors work with an assigned faculty member to facilitate group activities and discussions for an assigned section of students. Colloquium is designed to promote an awareness of the skills and tools necessary for building a fulfilling career, not only as performing artists, but also as global citizens and advocates for the arts. Colloquium introduces students to the values and diversity of the Juilliard community, and is intended to provide a foundation that will serve them well beyond their years at the School. The first class meeting is scheduled during Orientation.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Attend all Colloquium-related training sessions, meetings and events (peer mentor meetings, school performances, follow up meetings, etc.)
  • Meet with Facilitator and Colloquium group every Wednesday from 2-3pm for the fall semester.
  • Lead the Colloquium class at least once during the semester.
  • Meet with Facilitator as necessary to plan weekly group sessions.
  • Advise first time college students on transitional issues and school related concerns.
  • Refer students to appropriate support offices, administrative staff or faculty for assistance or guidance as needed.
  • Develop a supportive and encouraging relationship with group members.
  • Meet with each student individually in assigned sections once in the fall semester.
  • Assist the coordinators of Colloquium with the implementation of large group sessions (outreach and service panel, studio sessions, collaborative projects).
  • Assist with the dissemination of materials and performance tickets to assigned sections.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Time Commitment

  • Average of 2-3 hours per week during the fall semester (includes fall training)
  • 2 hour training session in April 2017

Qualifications

  • Full-time enrolled College Division student in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • Must have completed Colloquium with credit.
  • Candidates should be comfortable leading discussions in small group settings.
  • Have general knowledge about student services at Juilliard.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.

Remuneration

  • $10 per hour paid over the course of the fall semester to a maximum of $450 (TBD)

Diversity Advocate (DA)

General Description

Diversity Advocates (DAs) work with the Office of International Advisement to recognize issues of diversity and inclusion which impact the Juilliard community. Through cultural and educational programs, community forums, and informal interactions, DAs work to educate the larger campus community on issues pertaining to diversity, culture, internationalism, and social justice. DAs help to create a safe space in which potentially sensitive or uncomfortable issues can be discussed and addressed while also creating an environment in which diversity and culture can be celebrated and enjoyed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Attend all Diversity Advocate-related training sessions with follow-up meetings as needed
  • Act as the “lead” for at least one DA event each semester which includes submitting a proposal and budget to OIA’s assistant director in a timely manner as well as advertising, supervising, and evaluating the event
  • Create one passive program per semester to educate the Juilliard community on heritage months
  • Co-facilitate diversity sessions during Orientation
  • Act as an “assistant” for at least one DA event each semester which includes supporting the “lead” with program planning, promotion, set-up, clean-up, etc.
  • Assist Office of International Advisement with planning, implementation (i.e. set-up, supervision, clean-up etc.), and evaluation of cultural and educational programs (including heritage month events) with a targeted focus on diversity and inclusion
  • Work with other DAs to ensure at least one DA event per semester is for Foundations credit
  • Meet with the Assistant Director of OIA as needed to discuss program planning
  • Serve as a liaison between the student body and the Office of International Advisement
  • Submit timesheets and receipts for reimbursements in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned

Time Commitment

  • Average of 2-3 hours per week from September 2017-May 2018

Qualifications

  • Full-time enrolled College Division student in good academic and disciplinary standing
  • Ability to recognize and feel comfortable discussing issues pertaining to diversity and inclusion
  • Have general knowledge of diversity related issues and a strong interest in educating oneself on diversity related topics through research and discussion
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Attended an Orientation Diversity session

    Preferred qualifications:

  • Attended one or more Diversity Dialogue sessions
  • Participated in previous Diversity Advocate events/programs

Remuneration

  • $9.25 per hour

Orientation Leader (OL)

General Description

Orientation Leaders (OL) mentor first-year and new graduate students during the New Student Orientation. The OL is a student leader who helps new students and their families become acclimated to The Juilliard School and the larger New York City community. Orientation Chairs and Leaders for the Fall 2017 Orientation Program will go through intensive training from OSA in order to gain skills necessary to serve as a resource for students and family members. OLs will work with new students and family members to provide them with a clear understanding of life at Juilliard and opportunities to become involved in the community. OLs are role models, advisors, friends, but most of all, they are students themselves who care about the growth and development of incoming students.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Attend all training programs.
  • Act as a representative of The Juilliard School at all orientation sessions.
  • Work as a member of a larger team of students and staff in order to enhance the experience for new students and their families.
  • Fully prepare for the arrival of students and families by working with the RA’s to coordinate a check-in area and help move the new students into the residence hall.
  • Acquaint new students and family members with available student and School services.
  • Facilitate and lead small group sessions on tours of Juilliard and answer any questions they may have.
  • Lead small groups on Orientation Outings to acquaint new students with New York City. 
  • Plan and facilitate evening social events during Orientation.
  • Promote a positive image of themselves, the Orientation program, and the School.
  • Assist with creating a sense of belonging/community within The Juilliard School.
  • Assist new students in their transition to college life in a new city.
  • Provide leadership/mentorship to new students.
  • Introduce the resources and activities available at The Juilliard School.
  • Assist students to develop familiarity with their physical surroundings.
  • Provide insight on personal safety and security.
  • Provide accurate information and referrals.
  • Assist OSA staff in coordinating events and activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Time Commitment

  • OL Training: Monday, August 21st – Thursday, August 24th 
  • International Orientation: Friday, August 25th – Saturday, August 26th
  • New Student Move In: Sunday, August 27th
  • New Student Orientation: Monday, August 28th – Tuesday, September 5th

Qualifications

  • Full-time enrolled College Division student in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.

Remuneration

  • $425 stipend
  • 2 Orientation T-shirts
  • Meals provided during training and Orientation
  • Move in to the Residence Hall early (if you will be living there in the Fall 2017)

Campus Activities Board Member

General Description

The Campus Activities Board works with the Office of Student Affairs to develop and plan programming to enhance student life for the Juilliard community. Through social and educational programs, outings, and larger campus traditions, board members work to increase community on campus. Board members will be responsible for both planning small programs and assisting with larger traditional programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and implement four (4) programs of your choosing that fit within an assigned theme; two (2) each semester with at least two (1) of these programs per semester for Foundations credit.
  • Utilize the following categories for programs: Community Development, Health and Wellness, Life Essentials, Community Standards, and Diversity and Civic Engagement. These topics will be discussed at Fall Training. 
  • Research and implement social, cultural, and educational events/programs for Juilliard students.
  • Support with the set-up, supervision, and clean-up of six (6) larger, all-school programs and events – two (2) in the fall, two (2) in the spring plus Chill out Week in December and Stress Less Week in May.
  • Must attend at least two (2) programs in the fall and two (2) programs in the spring led by other Programming Assistants, Diversity Assistants, The Office of Student Affairs, and/or Resident Assistants.
  • Perform other duties and projects as developed and assigned by the Office of Student Affairs.

Time Commitment

  • Training to be held in early September – date TBA.
  • Training to be held in January – date TBA.
  • Average of 2 - 5 hours per week for Fall and Spring Semester.
  • Weekly meetings and 2 one on one meetings with Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Leadership each semester.

Qualifications

  • Full-time enrolled College Division student in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • Have general knowledge about student services at Juilliard.
  • Desire and enthusiasm to organize and plan events for all students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.

Remuneration

  • $10 per hour up to $500 a semester

Resident Assistant (RA)

General Description

The Resident Assistant (RA) is a paraprofessional staff member who lives on an assigned floor in the Meredith Willson Residence Hall and serves as a role model, peer counselor, resources and referral person, advocate, policy enforcer, programmer and leader for residents on the assigned floor. The RA assists with daily emergency coverage rotation. The RA also plans and implements social and educational programs. The primary goal of the RA position is the development of an environment conducive to the academic, artistic and personal growth of residential students. The RA reports to the Assistant Director of Residence Life. 

Primary Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings on Wednesday nights at 8:15PM – 9:45PM 
  • Participate in bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with supervisor and provide regular e-mail updates regarding situations in the hall with supervisor and Director of Residence Life as needed
  • Respond to any communication from the Assistant Director of Residence Life, Director of Residence Life, or Operations Assistant within 24 hours
  • Serve as an advocate for and a representative of floor residents by communicating concerns to supervisor
  • Understand the needs, goals and objectives and act as a liaison between the Office of Residence Life and residential students 
  • Participate in on-going training and staff development sessions throughout the year including:
    • Fall Training and New Student Move-in: August 18, 2017-August 27, 2017
    • Winter Training: January 5, 2018-January 7, 2018
  • Assist with the completion of roommate agreements 
  • Assist in identifying facilities in need of repair or attention
  • Promote a safe and sanitary living environment by facilitating monthly health and safety inspections and assisting in the coordination of cleaning schedules
  • Assist with the facilitation of fire drills each semester 
  • Participate in other School and building activities as assigned 
  • Assist in the preparation of hall for opening, closing and transition which requires you to arrive back from summer and winter break early

Community Development

  • Work with residents to create a living and learning environment that promotes academic, artistic, personal, and community development through activities such as floor meetings, programs and intentional one on one conversations
  • Provide opportunities for meaningful interactions for residents 
  • Implement five social and educational programs each semester including:
    • One Foundations program
    • One All-hall program
    • Three floor programs
  • Assist residents in academic, social and personal matters through resource referral 
  • Provide guidance and support and role model appropriate behaviors as a responsible community member 
  • Seek guidance and support from the Hall Coordinators, Assistant Director of Residence Life, and Director of Residence Life
  • Support the assessment of program effectiveness and learning outcomes by submitting program proposals (2 weeks before) and evaluations (48 hours after)

Crisis Response & Policy Enforcement

  • Know, communicate, enforce and abide by existing School and Residence Hall policies and procedures
  • Serve as a role model and be in good disciplinary standing with the school and the Residence Hall
  • Know School resources and make appropriate referrals 
  • Keep supervisors informed about all problems and concerns on floor 
  • Administer emergency well-being checks with residents upon request
  • Understand the difference between confidentiality vs. privacy as it pertains to issues of Title IX
  • Serve as a mandated reporter
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality while working in coordination with School staff 
  • Write timely, clear, and concise, but thorough online incident reports to document student conduct 
  • Participate in on-duty rotational coverage that requires you to be inside the Residence Hall during scheduled evenings, weekends, breaks and holidays including:
    • Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break (including audition week)

Time Commitment

  • Availability: RAs are expected to be sufficiently available in the hall to respond to emergency situations that may arise and to maintain regular contact with residents. A staff member who is not on duty and who plans to leave the hall for more than a 48 hour period must notify and/or obtain permission from hall supervisor. While on duty you are expected to be 100% available inside the Residence Hall from 9pm-9am.
  • Employment Period: The standard employment period for the RA position is one academic year, from August (about 9 days prior to Juilliard Residence Hall opening) and May (the day following commencement). Staff members are expected to report for training sessions prior to residence hall check-ins for both fall and spring semesters. The period of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of tasks, assignments and responsibilities and positive performance evaluations by the Assistant Director of Residence Life. Upon successful completion of the standard employment period, the RA may be considered to serve for an additional period. The RA position is a full-academic year position. 
  • Work Load: RAs can expect on average 20 hours per week in the residence hall, however some weeks (specifically around opening and closing) may require additional hours. These hours will be used in programming, staff meetings, one on one meetings, interactions with residents and duty. Please note that the residence hall work environment does encounter peak times including opening, closing and transition periods.  
  • Holidays, Breaks and Vacation Periods: RAs are required to serve on duty for a portion of Thanksgiving and/or Spring Break. During Winter Break, RAs are paid a daily rate to serve on duty. 
  • Meetings: RAs can expect to attend hall staff meetings each Wednesday evening from 8:15PM – 9:45PM. As well, regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings with the Assistant Director of Residence Life will be scheduled. These meetings are part of the 20 hour weekly commitment. 

Qualifications

  • RAs must be enrolled full-time in the college division 
  • RAs must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the school and the Residence Hall
  • RAs must display a commitment to community as a role model of good character, judgement, flexibility, responsibility, involvement and commitment to student life at the school 
  • RAs must successfully complete the application and selection process

Remuneration

  • RAs are compensated with a single room and 50% of meal plan covered

Hall Coordinator (HC)

General Description

The Hall Coordinator (HC) is a para professional staff member who lives in the Meredith Willson Residence Hall and serves as role model, resource and referral person, advocate, policy enforcer, programmer and emergency response resource for Resident Assistants (RA). The HC serves as the second tier of emergency crisis response acting as a liaison between the RA and the professional staff on duty. The primary goal of the HC position is the safety and security of the hall and to support the RA staff on duty. The HC reports to the Assistant Director of Residence Life. 

Primary Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings on Wednesday nights at 8:15PM – 9:45PM 
  • Participate in bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with the supervisor and provide regular e-mail updates regarding situations in the hall with the Director and Assistant Director of Residence Life
  • Respond to any communication from the Assistant Director of Residence Life, Director of Residence Life, or Operations Assistant within 24 hours

  • Create educational opportunities for student staff to implement safety and security measures in the hall via programming, communication and personal interactions with residents
  • Plan and implement one all-hall program a semester with a group of RAs
  • Serve as lead for 1 out of 3 collateral assignments including: health and safety inspections, duty scheduling, or staff development.
  • Assist RAs and residents in academic, social and personal matters through resource referral 
  • Provide guidance and support and role model appropriate behaviors as a responsible community member

A staff member who is not on duty and who plans to leave the hall for more than a 48 hour period must notify and/or obtain permission from hall supervisor. While on duty you are expected to be 100% available and within 10 minutes of the Residence Hall from 5pm-9am on weekdays and 9am-9am on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Employment Period: The standard employment period for the HC position is one academic year, from August (about 13 days prior to Juilliard Residence Hall opening) to May (the day after commencement). Staff members are expected to report for training sessions prior to residence hall check-ins for both fall and spring semesters. The period of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of tasks, assignments and responsibilities and positive performance evaluations by the Assistant Director of Residence Life. Upon successful completion of the standard employment period, the HC may be considered to serve for an additional period. The HC position is a full-academic year position. 
  • Work Load: HCs can expect about 20 hours per week in the residence hall. These hours will be used in programming, staff meetings, one on one meetings, interactions with student staff and duty. Please note that the residence hall work environment does encounter peak times including opening, closing and transition periods. That said, some weeks more than 20 hours may be needed. Duty rotation is excluded from this time estimate. 
  • Meetings: HCs can expect to attend hall staff meetings each Wednesday evening from 8:15PM – 9:45PM. As well, regularly scheduled one on one meetings with the Assistant Director of Residence Life will be scheduled. These meetings are part of the 20 hour weekly commitment. 

Qualifications

  • HCs must be enrolled full-time in the college division 
  • HCs must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the school
  • Previous RA experience is preferred 
  • HCs must have experience living in a residence hall community 
  • HCs must have excellent crisis management and conflict resolution skills 
  • HCs must successfully complete the application and selection process
  • HCs must display a commitment to community as a role model of good character, judgement, flexibility, responsibility, involvement and commitment to student life at the school 

Remuneration

  • HCs are compensated with a single room and full board plan, estimated at an $18,500 value.
